American songwriter, saxophonist, and producer Boney James is a trendsetter in the world of contemporary jazz. He boasts a career spanning the decades. During this time, James has earned himself four Grammy Award Nominations and a Soul Train Award for Best Jazz Album. He also has four RIAA-certified Gold records, 17 chart-topping albums, and over three million downloaded albums.

James was only eight when he started playing the clarinet. However, he moved on to the saxophone two years later. When James was fifteen, he joined the fusion band “Line One.” The band was privileged to open for the Yellowjackets and Flora Purim. Over time, he honed his craft and got the opportunity to perform with other gifted musicians. These include Bobby Caldwell, Morris Day, Randy Crawford, and more. As a result, he secured a record deal as a solo artist with Spindletop Records in 1991.

Like all legendary artists, James is not afraid to experiment with his music. This has allowed him to develop a sound that is uniquely his. He combines elements of contemporary jazz, RnB, and hip-hop, which is clearly evident from his fifth album “Sweet Thing.” However, it is also worth noting that James characterizes himself as more of an instrumental R&B player. He cites powerhouses like Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, and Earth, Wind & Fire as some of his biggest musical influences. His determination to constantly push the boundaries has allowed Boney to gain new fans while holding on to old ones with each new release.

It is amazing that after three decades of recording, performing, and touring, James continues to pleasantly surprise us. Follow this acclaimed instrumentalist on his socials to stay up to date with his work. For more Lounge music news and information, do check out our website – DLK Lounge.
